Parks That Perform: A Gipson Play Plaza Tour

  • Gipson Play Plaza (Tour) 801 Biggs Drive Raleigh, NC, 27603 United States (map)

Join us on April 22, 2026, from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM (EDT) for a walking tour of Gipson Play Plaza at Dix Park, led by Kate Pearce with the City of Raleigh.

Meet at the large PLAY letters

Gipson Play Plaza sits on a portion of the historic former Dorothea Dix Hospital grounds and features 18.5 acres of playgrounds, gathering spaces, gardens, public art, and sweeping skyline views of Raleigh.

During this guided walking tour, attendees will explore how the plaza was designed to serve as both a destination park and a community gathering space. The discussion will highlight the planning and design strategies behind the project, the importance of access to high-quality public parks in growing cities, and the partnerships and funding efforts that helped bring the vision to life.

Attendees will gain insight into:

  • The design approach and programming behind Gipson Play Plaza

  • How public parks contribute to community identity and livability

  • The role of partnerships, philanthropy, and funding in delivering large civic projects

  • Lessons learned from transforming historic land into vibrant public space

This outdoor session offers a unique opportunity to experience a nationally recognized park project firsthand while learning from the team involved in bringing it to life.
